I was introduced to the CycleAware Viewpoint mirror about 4 years ago in Manhattan Beach, Calif. I was conducting indoor air testing experiments as part of my doctoral work at UC Davis, and my son’s small duplex unit on the ocean was one of the test sites. I was out for a leisurely ride up the coast (towards Malibu) and another cyclist blew by me without a word. I gave chase just to see if I could catch him, and finally managed to do so a few miles later (with the help of a red stop light). We rode together for a bit and he showed me his Viewpoint mirror – he told me he could see chasing him the entire time – and claimed it was invaluable for riding on the busy LA streets. I was skeptical, but he made me promise to give it a try – and to be patient with the initial adjustment.
Well, he was 100% right on all counts. I bought a Viewpoint when I returned to Davis, and after some rather frustrating attempts at adjusting the placement and angle of the mirror I got it just right. It has been a fixture on my glasses ever since.
On a recent 4 month work assignment in Maputo, Mozambique, I showed a few of the local riders my Viewpoint – so if you start getting orders from Copa Ciclismo don’t be surprised!
